Gonzaga rolled over the Fightin' Mastodons of IPFW tonight, 90-55. At first glance, you'd think that the win solidifies the theory that the Zags are definitively better than the Cougs. After all, WSU only beat IPFW by a measly 19 points. The Zags had their game statistically buried wih 7:52 left; the Cougs finished theirs at the 6:40 mark. But a look at the four factors shows us it's not completely black and white:

Then there are Knox's parents. Although they are divorced, they have offered a unified front of support for their daughter. They, too, have paid a heavy price. Knox's father, Curt, told an Italian television audience that his family is in "six-figure debt" in legal and travel bills to support Amanda in Perugia. He lost his job when Macy's department store in Seattle downsized and is currently looking for work. Knox's mother, Edda, a schoolteacher, can't take any more time off work and says she probably won't go back to Perugia until a verdict is reached. Sources close to the family also hint of feuds between Knox's divorced parents and their spouses. The family members rotate in and out of Perugia, and when they are here, they share a dilapidated car and stay in a tiny hovel outside of town. They bring canned food and ready-to-eat meals from Seattle; they are rarely seen in public except for court hearings or media appearances. They say they have exercised every available financial resource and now rely on donations to stay afloat.

But the tragedy extends far beyond the immediate families. Patrick Lumumba, the man Knox originally accused of murdering Kercher during an intense interrogation, had to close his bar, Le Chic, due to loss of business. He spent two weeks in prison in November 2007 and is suing Knox for more than half a million dollars in damages. Ivory Coast native Rudy Guede was convicted last October for his part in the crime and is serving a 30-year sentence. He admits to being at the house and says Knox and Sollecito were there too, but says he is not the one who killed Kercher. Guede's appeal starts Nov. 18, and he has hired a private investigator to help find new witnesses to bolster the case against the current defendants.

It was mentioned in another lengthy thread, and perhaps lost in the shuffle a bit, but I don't recall a Zag who only played 11 minutes and attempted no shots who impressed me more than Arop did last night.

I counted three gorgeous passes into the post and his six rebounds were emphatic. How a 6'5" kid gets up and grabs that ball like he does is pure effort. He's still a baby wildebeast out there at times but he's just oozing with potential.

If any of you go to the games, be sure to watch Manny in pregame warmups. His 3-point shot is spot-on and he has great shooting form. And that's not even his strong suit, the mid-range game is.

I see big things for this kid in his career here.

Kong will be an offensive force. 8 pts in 10 mins. And he could've had more. Few wants him to be instant offense. He is noticeably rusty and not up to game speed, but it's been two years since he played organized ball and that organized ball was likely closer to street ball than anything structured like Few's system. Time is his best friend now.

“We were just so excited to play, it was kind of ‘whoa, we need to slow it down a little bit,’ ” sophomore center Robert Sacre said of GU’s jittery start. “We were all fired up because of the loss to Michigan State. We’re hungrier than we’ve ever been and we just want to push ourselves and get better.”

I love to hear that kind of attitude, especially from our big guy! I love the energy and desire that I see from this team. I can't wait for the rest of the season to unfold!

Well, it's Saturday morning and we've got a nice weekend in fromt of us. I thouht it would be nice to start a nice thread about what you're thinking about, and looking forward to seeing in the upcoming tournament in Maui. I have really good memories of this tournament.

I predited that the Zags would win Maui last summer. I felt, and stll do, that this would be our chance to step up and make a statement. There are some real good teams in this tournament that have a lot of pide in the name on their jerseys, just as the Zags do. Maryland, Arizona, Wisconsin and Cinncy, these are storied programs, who, like Gonzaga, are wanting to make a statement in Maui. Then you have Vandy, who is a very good team (I think from the SEC), who's supposed to have a pretty good team this year. And finally Colorado, who I believe is making plans to knock off the Zags. Fortunately, I know that Few and his staff is doing the same thing. We'd better be ready for a tough Big 12 team.

I think that our experience at Michigan State will help us. The Zags proved that they can play on the road against a very high quality team. They will take that experience to Maui with them. I would like to have the chance to beat Arizona for the first time. Like Gonzaga, I hear that they too have a better team than many anticipated, and they have a very good coach. Isn't he from Xavier? I don't think we've ever played Wisconsin, so that would be a great match up as well. They have a very good coach, who I like, so they will definitely come to play. I've seen them play and they are good.

I think the guys on the team really look forward to going to Maui, and having that chance to play in one of the best pre-season tournaments in the country. I would think it's another very good reason to play at Gonzaga.

I look forward to seeing what you have to say.

The bench is a significant part of every basketball team. It's a work of art in and of itself. Everyone on the team has a role to play, and this includes everyone on the bench. I think the key to being a good bench player is to "be ready." Be ready for that moment when the coach calls your name to go into that game and do something positive. Do something that the coaches will remember. You need to capture their attention.

Everyone on that bench is a very good basketball player. They wouldn't even be there if they had not been "stars" in high school. These guys can all score too. The key is to go into the game with the confidence that you can knock down that shot when you see the opening. You'd be amazed at how similar the shots that you take in college are the same as those you take in highschool. Why? Because most of the time a shooter is taking open shots. Just relax, and shoot the ball the way you have been doing since you were a little kid.

And if you're a smart bench player you'll give it 110% effort every minute you are on the court. That means if you have a chance to hit the floor, then do it. The way that Olynyk and GJ do. Jerry Krause is keeping record of everything each player does, and he's a master of his trade. So do some things that will get Krause's attention.

I thought the bench looked better than the others last night, and that's a great sign. They are still fighting for playing time. Bol Kong certainly came into the game and did some good things, and I think he did catch Krause's attention, and maybe Few's too. But he still has a ways to go on some of the small things, that are not so small in the coaches eyes. Overeall, I did not think he looked too lost out there. And he certainly is comfortable with the ball in his hands. He needs work on D and rebonding for sure. I was really happy that he got his chance. When Few recently said that he would still get his chance because he hasn't been thrilled by the play of his wings. As far as Manny goes, he seems to be playing mostly in a 4 guard offensive set. He can contribute in this set because of his high rebounding skills. I think he got 6 last night. He is also a TEAM first player and is showing that he has good vision on the court. I really liked that pass he made to Sacre last night when he went up with the mid-range jumper and then hit Bobby for a layup. I see some of Pendo in him, and that's saying a lot.
