Default Nick Johnson, Kyle Wiltjer, John McArthur

Here's some highlights from the championship game of the "Rumble in the Bay" tournament, featuring the Drew Gooden Soldiers ("DGS") and the Bay Area Hoosiers, held Memorial Day Weekend (if I remember correctly). DGS features a few players who are on Gonzaga's radar, including Nick Johnson (#20), Kyle Wiltjer (#12), and John McArthur (#23). DGS is wearing the white jerseys.

This was basketball as it was meant to be played. With neither team able to deliver a knockout blow, the looming perception was the last possession would decide the outcome. That it did as the Bay Area Hoosiers won by three, 99-96, over the Drew Gooden Soldiers in the championship game of The Rumble In The Bay tournament Monday afternoon.

Here how the last five minutes played out: The Hoosiers led by two, 75-73, when James Moore knocked down a three-pointer to open up a five point difference.

Nick Johnson scored on a dribble-drive floater to cut the lead back to three. Desmond Simmons went across the lane on a dribble drive, was fouled and made one of two free throws at the 4:03 mark.

A Kiwi Gardner layup boosted the Hoosier lead back to four, 80-76. The Soldiers got a trey followed by Travis Souza's two foul shots for the Hoosiers.

Simmons scored on a driving layup, was fouled and nailed the free throw to tie the game at 82 with 2:19 remaining.

After a Hoosier two, Johnson nailed a three-pointer to give the Soldiers an 85-84 margin.

Souza responded with a trey of his own out of the left corner and Gardner followed with a steal and a three to make it 90-85 advantage Hoosiers.

Jabari Brown put down two free throws but Dominique Lee did likewise. Brown then missed on a jumper and the Hoosiers Moore was fouled. He made one of his two foul shots, making the score 93-87.

Johnson was subsequently fouled on a drive and also put down one of his two free throws -- the score 93-88 with 29.9 seconds on the clock.

After a Hoosier turnover on the inbounds pass, Johnson was fouled again and dropped both foul shots, reducing the lead to a single possession.

Dominique Lee was fouled and notched both attempts at the charity stripe, upping the lead to 95-90 at the 20.3 mark.

Johnson was fouled once more, nailed both free throws and again reduced the lead to three, 95-92.

Souza was then put on the charity stripe with 13.5 seconds remaining and made the first and the second shots, providing the Hoosiers with a five point margin.

From the right side, Brown made a three-pointer to bring the Soldiers within two, 97-95. 7.5 seconds showed on the clock.

Moore was fouled yet again and notched one of two free throws. The Hoosiers were back up by three at 98-95. But Kyle Wiltjer was fouled as he rebounded the miss. He went to the line at the other end with a pair of shots coming to him. 6.7 seconds remained.

Wiltjer made the first but erred on the second attempt. The Soldiers faced a two point deficit.

Yet again, Moore was fouled, this with 5.5 seconds showing. He missed his initial try but made the second, giving the Hoosiers a 99-96 lead.

Johnson came down the court, a bit to the right of the key and launched a 22-footer. It was close but caught the rim and bounced away as the buzzer sounded.

At the half, the Hoosiers led by one, 46-45, based on a Gardner layup just before the buzzer. The Soldiers jumped out to an early lead, ahead by a rotation of five, six or seven points until the Hoosiers closed the gap right around the six minute mark.

John McArthur was an offensive force in the initial half, probably the most valuable player at that point. He stepped out and nailed a trey, went to his left and scored three times, plus put down an eight-foot pullup jumper off a dribble-drive. For whatever reasons, MacArthur got less touches in the second half.
